More on Methane... E-mail

Methane is a great fuel. It occurs naturally with the decomposition of plants, and is the main part of Natural Gas. However it is a very powerful greenhouse gas. It is 21 times more powerful than CO2. That being said, it would be a huge benefit to the planet to use as little Natural Gas as possible. That is, Methane from oil and gas wells. I'll call this "old"methane. The carbon in this form of methane has been stored below the ground for millions of years. And instead use "new" methane. Methane produced from current sources of carbon.

What I mean by current sources, is carbon that is already on the surface of the planet. such as rotting garbage, plant matter and so on. There is a project in Southern California, where human waste is being pumped into old oil wells and the heat and pressure is turning it into methane. The new gas is being extracted to make electricity. The beauty of this system, is that a waste product, human poo, has just been turned into a resource.

Methane can be produced from animal waste as well. The Strauss Family Creamery in Northern California, produces enough methane to produce 300,000 kilowatt-hours per year. It has reduced it fly population and smell. The left over solids are used to condition the soils and the liquid is used as fertilizer.  Nothing wasted, all pluses.

There are other sources of methane that unfortunately probably can't be harvested, such as the melting tundra. plenty of methane there, just no way to harvest it. greenhouse gas galore. Every molecule of methane that can be captured and burned is one more CO2, but one less methane (CH4). and Every every loose CH4 floating around in the atmosphere is 21 worse than a CO2. That means that harvesting methane from these sources is not just about energy, but about reducing greenhouse gases.
